He was about three when the family made their journey west. He was probably named after Uncle, Allcestes Kerr. On the 1860 census, age 11, with parents in Farmington, Van Buren Co., Ia .(p. 420, fam #1559/1577) On 1870 census, age 21, with parents in Walnut Twp., Dallas Co., Ia .(p. 642, fam #34/34) We see him on the 1880 census, Walnut Twp., Dallas Co., Ia., age 31 and a farmer. Wife RoseAnn, 23, is caring for the three children in the home.(ED 52, p. 38, fa m #311/313) In 1885, on the Ia. State Census, he continues in Walnut Twp, age 35, farming on range 79, twp 26, sect. 3 - the SE 1/4 of the SE section. Wife Rose A., 29, is caring for 3 children. It appears that daughter Rose has died and she has born another child, Charles. (fam #53/53) On the 1900 census they continue in Walnut Twp. Ulcestus, 57, continues to farm. Roseanne, 44, declares they have been married 25 years, she has born 6 children, 5 alive at this time. We see all five children still in the home, as well as one Ella Wendell, 17, a servant - cook.(fam #158/161) In his mother's estate, (#1376, Box F2, 1900, Dallas Co. , Ia.,) in 1900, Ulcestes is listed as living in Grimes., Ia., age 50. In the estate he receives $85.00 and later $57.83. He is Administrator of her estate and later becomes guardian for sisters Ella and Carrie. Ella and Carrie won't accept their inheritance due to religous beliefs and so he holds their portions. Later Ella claims hers, but Carrie never does. Eventually he turns her guardianship over to John Rittgers. On the 1910 census, we find them still in Walnut Twp. Ulcestes us now 61 and continues as a farmer on a general farm. Rosan, 54 , declares they have been married 34 years and she has born 6 children, 5 alive at this time. Two children continue in the home.(ED 20, p. 7A, fam# 139/143) In 1920, Walnut Twp., "U.S ." is 70 and a "farmer, retired". "Rosa A.", 63, continues in the home, as does daughter Fern C., 26.
