Marriage to Nancy Davis

From a letter dated 25 Oct 1970 by Nellie A GARD:

Hiram GARD mentioned Polly GARD, daughter of Timothy GARD, Hiram's brother. Timothy married Nancy DAVIS, a niece of Isaac WILLIAMS, who owned the land just across the river from Marietta in Wood County VA. Isaac called Nancy his niece in his will, and willed Timothy and Nancy $100.00. Isaac had no children. He willed his slaves their freedom. Timothy and Nancy removed to Licking County (OH) and we know little about them except the names of their children. On my way to Columbus once, I stopped at the county seat, Newark, but learned little except about land titles. A portion of the court house had burned some years ago, at which time the marriage records for the first part of the Minetueth County were largely lost.

From a letter dated 29 Dec 1970 by Nellie A GARD:

Two days ago a genealogist friend called to give me records he had found on tape, which he got from El Paso, TX on rental basis. He has a reader. First he gave me DOT"Y records from 1880 census of Franklin County, OH, and reserved to the last what he knew was "pay dirt" as I call such things. He had found two families of GARD in that Census in Franklin County, OH. Brent (see below) had had little success getting vital records or any other helpful information from descendants of Timothy, son of Cornelius, who went early to Licking County, OH. I went to the county seat, Newark several years ago and found practically all early records, vital records especially, had been burned in a fire, though I did get some land records. Some of the names in those Franklin County, Rinoldsburg, families were Timothy, Isaac, Nancy and Hiram - so I think with these to use in a letter to GARDS in Zanesville, they may prove tobe descendants of Timothy and Nancy (DAVIS) GARD. It is the best clue I have to learning more about Timothy's descendants.

Extracted from a letter dated 25 Oct 1970:

Nellie is referring above to her semi-invalid cousin Brent GARD, who was housebound, through the 1930's and the 1940's but who had a wide correspondence He was considerably older then Nellie, and knew so many of the old-timers in the western part of the county that he collected vital records for all branches of the family. He had organized these families with a numbering system all his own. I discarded that and gave each person a generation number based on Dr John(1) DUNSMOOR, b abt 1720, our first known DUNSMOOR in this country. So I have long tables of Descendants of each of the children of Phineas and Polly, as well as something about many of the people in essay form.
