HIATT and HIETT Genealogy by William Percy JOHNSON:

In 1902, on occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the settling of Palmer, OH, a pamphlet, the "PALMER CENTENNIAL" was written. The following is taken from this pamphlet:

David GARD married 25 Mar 1802 to Mary HIETT, daughter of James and Lucretia (PUGH) HIETT. On the day following their marriage, the started, along with James HIETT and family, for the Ohio River, overland, then near 300 miles away. They crossed the Allegheny Mountains with their four horse wagon and team arriving at Vienna about the last of April of the same year, six miles above Parkersburg on the Ohio River, Virginia side, where James HIETT had previously been and purchased a farm of over 300 acres, upon which was a large improvement, some 200 acres of land cleared, two frame dwelling houses and two large barns. This property, until a few years ago, remained in the HIETT family.

James HIETT had 10 children (not counting three who died in infancy - editor). Mary, Timothy, and Amy lived in Palmer Township, Washington County, OHIO. The others live near and on the HIETT farm, which is now valuable with oil, but in the hands of strangers. This HIETT possession was some twenty miles from Wesley (now Palmer), OH where the GARDS settled, the HIETT farm being on the Virginia side of the river. (R80)

From a letter by Nellie A GARD dated 25 Oct 1970:

I'm sure you know Wm JOHNSON's book "HIATT-HIETT GENEALOGY". The David GARD house shown in it has apparently been repaired and is still standing. There is a porch across the front and the large stone fireplace in the kitchen is gone, but the roof and eaves lines seem the same.

From the book "History of Washington County Ohio" on page 716 There is an article on the Gard family. There are also pictures of Hiram Gard and Ataline Gard.

David Gard left two sons, Hiram born May 11, 1804 and James Hiett, born January 2, 1828; and four daughters, Maria, born, August 20, 1806, Rowena, born December 20, 1810, Sophia, born January 3, 1815; and Jane, born March 15, 1817 (died in infancy by accidental scalding).

Rowena married Edward Camp October 3, 1833, and reared two sons, George L and David H, both of whom served honorably in the war against the Rebellion (George L., during an engagement with the enemy, at the battle of Mission ridge, stopped one of the enemy's balls, which passed through many thicknesses of blanket and his trousers, and stopped in the midst of his silver lever watch, after entirely destoying it). and three daughters, Josephine, who married William Vincent; Augusta, who married twice, Dr. William Bates and J. R. Horniday; and Emma, unmarried.

Hope this is useful
