From the Carlisle Mercury News, Carlisle, Nicholas County, KY, 20 June 1912: "At his home in this city Sunday, June 16, 1912, after several months illness and old age, Mr. Edward W. Shankland, aged 78 years. Deceased was for many years a resident of this city and was recognized as one of the best citizens. He was a faithful member of the Methodist Church and a member of Daugherty Lodge F. & A. Masons, and was prompt in all duties to his fellowman. He is survived by his widow and three sons---Jas. Shankland of Owingsville, Chas. Shankland of Lexington, and Clinton Shankland of California. Burial at Carlisle cemetery Monday after services at Methodist church by Rev.  I believe he is the 'Thompson Southland' listed in the 1900 census in Oakland, ward 5, Alameda Co., California. Thompson is 37, born Aug 1862 in Kentucky (parents same), married 10 years, agent 'fire ins'; his wife Gertrude is 32, born Aug 1867 in Missouri (father Kentucky, mother Missouri), with 2 of 2 children living; the children are Genevieve 9, born Feb 1891 and Harold 7 born Nov 1892 -- both in California (father Kentucky, mother Missouri). Boarders are Mercy M. Stevens 52, widow from New Jersey, with daughter Mary H. 24 born New Jersey. {ed 370, sh 6a, p. 152}

 In the 1930 census for Portland, there are listings for Thompson C. Shankland 1863 and Elizabeth Shankland 1880.
 According to 'Descendants of William Shankland', Thompson married Gertrude Fleming in 1889; and Elizabeth Marie Slatter (1884-1966).
