 From the Carlisle Mercury News, Carlisle, Nicholas County, KY, 20 June 1912: "At his home in this city Sunday, June 16, 1912, after several months illness and old age, Mr. Edward W. Shankland, aged 78 years...He is survived by his widow and three sons---Jas. Shankland of  Owingsville, Chas. Shankland listed in Montgomery ward 3, Montgomery Co., Alabama, age 20 from Kentucky, civil engineer, boarding with Luther Fleming household.
