I believe she may be the Gertrude 'Flemming' age 2, b. Missouri, shown in the 1870 census in Butler, Bates Co., Missouri, with Miles 32 b. Canada, farmer; and Ellen 24 Indiana.

 I have not been able to locate her in the 1880 census.  She could be in Missouri, Kansas or California. Her mother may have remarried, or Gertrude may be living with a relative.
In the 1900 census in Oakland, ward 5, Alameda Co., California. Thompson 'Southland' is 37, born Aug 1862 in Kentucky (parents same), married 10 years, agent 'fire ins'; his wife Gertrude is 32, born Aug 1867 in Missouri (father Kentucky, mother Missouri), with 2 of 2 children living; the children are Genevieve 9, born Feb 1891 and Harold 7 born Nov 1892 -- both in California (father Kentucky, mother Missouri). Boarders are Mercy M. Stevens 52, widow from New Jersey, with daughter Mary H. 24 born New Jersey. {ed 370, sh 6a, p. 152}
 There is a record of a divorce between T. C. Shankland and Gertrude Shankland in 1910 in Clackamas Co., Oregon. {Oregon State Archives}They are living separately in 1910.
 In the 1910 census for Stanyan Street in San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California, Gertrude L. Shankland is 42, born California (father Canada, mother Indiana), married once for 20 years, with 2 of 2 children living, 'own income'. Her daughter Genevieve is 19, single, born California (parents same). {ed 232, sh 8b, p. 56}  In the 1910 census for Portland, ward 5, Multnomah Co., Oregon, T. C. Shankland is a lodger, age 46, born Kentucky (parents same), married 20 years, 'adjuster insurance'. {ed 160, sh 9?, p.  275}
 In the 1920 census, Genevieve is living alone in Oregon, so Gertrude may have died or remarried.
 According to 'Descendants of William Shankland', Thompson married Gertrude Fleming in 1889; and Elizabeth Marie Slatter (1884-1966).
 There is a listing for WWII draft registration in 1942 in New York for Harold Fleming Shankland [a grandson?]
