Facts and Events
Thomas E Shearer lived on Lot 14, concession 4 of Elma Township. The fire number is 6193 Line 81. When the house was built, it was reported to have been the "most modern house in Elma Township." It was one of the few that had indoor plumbing. He was always known as Thomas E...one of the family legends says that he used the "E" to distinguish himself from all the other Thomas Shearers in the neighbourhood. A survey of the Shearer family could support that...there were other Thomas's in Elma at the time...but in actual fact the "E" stood for EDWARD. This came as a bit of a surprise since the name "Edwin" resonates for a few generations in Thomas's eldest son's descendants. In another branch of the Shearer family tree there IS a Thomas Edwin...which just confuses the situation more. Family members say that Thomas E was fairly close to this branch of the family and that both would vie for the "Would the real Thomas E please stand up" award.Rumour has it that the Elma one won.....
