Entry date; Nov. 13, 1999 Benzie Banner; 1917, ---- Researched; Nov. 1999 Dec. 13,- "Pg. 1" Tommy Lung Does Fine Chipping Job ---- "Tommy Lung" is no kid, as the title might lead one to think. He is a vigirous seventy - three - year - old. Neither are we to judge from the pages of this issue of the paper that the fellows of his age are all dying off. Tommy is very much alive and has just finished a chopping job that puts to shame many a young fellow too soft for a little hard work, and to tender for a few snow flakes. This is Tommy's stunt: He secured the opportunity to cut wood in F.L. Orcutt's swamp, Just beyound the ice -house in Beulah, as one starts out on the old Narrow Fauge road. Mr. Orcut anticipated good things from the man because he had a good rwputation; but he got, not the ordinary good thing one expects but a real surprise. Instead of quitting at four or five courds twice as much as the man casting his first vote would cut, -- he kept regular clip till he had put up his thirty - five cords of nice wood, all piled as evenly as possible. So nicely has he cleared and burned the brush that those going by have stopped to admire and ask who did the work. Finally the snow has become so deep that it is not fit for any "boy" to work at this job, and he will let it rest for a time. But he can rest assured that if he becomes a shut-in, he will not want for human sympathy and visiting friends. Such men, in doing their bit, are supporters of their country in its needs, whether in peace or war, and set a worthy example for us all. Entry date.
