Thomas Fernihough was baptised on 27th July 1784 at Bottesford in Leicestershire, son of Sarah Fernihough, formerly Castledine, and her husband William Fernihough, a labourer. Thomas was the second of their six children.

On 13th January 1812, aged 27, Thomas married Lucy Vessey at Barnby in the Willows in Nottinghamshire, about twelve miles north of Bottesford.

Later that year they had a son, Vessey Fernihough, baptised at Norwell, about ten miles north-west of Barnby. By 1814 they had settled at North Collingham, about nine miles north of Barnby. At North Collingham they lived at the Jolly Bargeman Inn at Collingham Wharf on the River Trent, a little way out of the village itself. As well as running the inn, Thomas worked as a miller.

Thomas and Lucy had another eight children baptised at North Collingham between 1814 and 1831. Back in Bottesford, Thomas's mother died in 1830.

In 1831 Thomas and Lucy's eldest son, Vessey, was convicted of sheep stealing. He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to transportation to Australia for fourteen years.

Thomas and Lucy's eldest daughter died aged seventeen in 1832. Thomas's father died in 1837 at Bottesford.

In 1842 Thomas appears to have inherited some houses and farmland at Flintham from Elizabeth Fernihough, who appears to have been his aunt by marriage, having been married to Thomas's father's brother Thomas. He put the property up for auction in November 1842.

The 1841 and 1851 censuses each find Thomas, Lucy and their children living at North Collingham. In 1841 Thomas was described as a victualler and in 1851 he was described as a miller.

Thomas died on 28th June 1854 at North Collingham, aged about seventy. Lucy survived him by nearly 27 years.
