Lucy Vessey was born on 7th April 1788 and baptised six days later at Barnby in the Willows in Nottinghamshire, daughter of Gervase Vessey and his wife Lucy.
On 13th January 1812, aged 23, Lucy married Thomas Fernihough at Barnby. Later that year they had a son, Vessey Fernihough, baptised at Norwell, about ten miles north-west of Barnby. By 1814 they had settled at North Collingham, about nine miles north of Barnby. At North Collingham they lived at the Jolly Bargeman Inn at Collingham Wharf on the River Trent, a little way out of the village itself. As well as running the inn, Thomas worked as a miller.
Lucy and Thomas had another eight children baptised at North Collingham between 1814 and 1831. Also in 1831 their eldest son, Vessey, was convicted of sheep stealing. He was originally sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to transportation to Australia for fourteen years.
Lucy and Thomas's eldest daughter died aged seventeen in 1832.
Thomas died in 1854, aged about seventy. After his death, Lucy lived with her daughter Maria and her husband in North Collingham, although in the 1871 census Lucy was visiting her son William at Arnold near Nottingham. One of Lucy's daughters emigrated to America.
Lucy died on 17th May 1881 at her daughter and son-in-law's house in North Collingham. She was 93 years old. Her death was reported in Ohio where her daughter lived, with the obituary focussing on Lucy's Christian faith.

DIED. FERNIOUGH.-At Holly House, the home of her son-in-law, Nottinghamshire, England, on Tuesday,May 17th, 1881, Mrs. LUCY FERNIOUGH, aged ninety-three years, one month and ten days. Mrs. Ferniough was the mother of Mrs. Joseph Whitehead, of Clyde. She died in the belief of a glorious resurrection; the fact of salvation was settled in her mind, and the prospect of meeting Jesus robbed death of its terror. She was brought to her grave at full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in its season. "Blessed are they that do is will, that they have a right to the tree of life, and enter in through the gate into the city above."
