Sarah Fernihough was born on 20th September 1786 and baptised five days later at Bottesford in Leicestershire, daughter of Sarah Fernihough, formerly Castledine, and her husband William Fernihough, a labourer. It is not clear what became of Sarah, although she clearly lived to adulthood and survived both her parents and appears to have married a Mr Smedley. She was mentioned as Sarah Smedley in 1840 in the will of her aunt Elizabeth, widow of her father's brother Thomas.
