Story of the life of Thomas BARTLETT c1733-1806 of VA

(By User:JimBartlett, posted 7 Oct 2009)

Thomas BARTLETT was born to Thomas and Elizabeth BARTLETT in Richmond Co, VA. His mother died before he was 10, and his father married Catherine, who became his step-mother. Thomas witnessed a Will in 1848 (age 15) but then married Anne (not Anne SETTLE) and moved away without leaving any other trace in Richmond Co. By 1769 Thomas and Anne and 8 children were in Fauquier Co, VA. They had two more children and Thomas bought a large Plantation. Soon their children began marrying. Anne died sometime around the start of the RevWar, and in Jan 1777 Thomas BARTLETT married Sarah CARROLL. Two of his sons fought in the RevWar, and the whole family supported the cause. Thomas and Sarah had 5 more children. In 1785 Thomas sold the remainder of his property, including some to his son William, and he and most of his family moved westward to Harrison Co, VA. Thomas carved out a large farm on the west side of the West Fork River, just south of Lumberport, and his sons also had farms throughout Harrison Co. In the early 1800s Sarah died, and Thomas gave land and slaves to his children. When he died in 1806, he had 15 children and over 100 grandchildren. He was a true pioneer. I've documented over 10,000 of his descendants; and we have matching DNA that proves his ancestry and descendants.

-1751 Prince William Co, VA: A list of Taxpayers for Hamilton Parish, 1751: about 300 names in rough chronological order, then about 40 apparently additional names including “BARTLETT, Thos.” about half-way thru the additional names. At the end is: “Form of Account: 1751 To 5.; To Jno. CRUMP County & Parish Levys” [“The Newsletter,” of the Prince William Co Genealogical Society; Dec 1991 (list was originally published in “Bulletin of the Fauquier Hist. Soc. in Jun 1923 p 239-42, under the title “List of Taxpayers, Elk Run and Vicinity, 1751” from the Account Book of Capt. John CRUMP, Sheriff of Pr Wm Co.); the Prince William editor notes that the 1751 list “appears to have been compiled in 1751, and was probably added to through 1755 (the names out of order near the end of the list are probably new taxpayers in the district) ... I would guess it contains tithable information about all households in the district, not just those of land owners.”] [Based on his location about the middle of the added list, I’d guess that Thomas BARTLETT was added about 1753 ... jvb]

[Where was Thomas BARTLETT for 17 years from 1751 to 1768???]

-1752 Thomas BARTLETT was about 18 years old, probably just married [first child born 3 Feb 1753]. So Thomas could have been in (and/or married in) Prince William County (the part not taken by Fairfax County in 1742)
