Needed: Evidence to support/refute the marriage of Thomas Bartlett and Anne Settle [30 June 2013]

Jim4Bartletts - you originally wrote, "Thomas witnessed a Will in 1848 (age 15) but then married Anne (not Anne SETTLE)". Then Bmswiler - you recently (20130507) attached this Thomas to a marriage with Anne Settle. The evidence either for or against this marriage has not been posted. Can either of you provide some supporting evidence either for or against the marriage that can be added to the page to prevent the error from propagating? Perhaps a "no merge" or a "not to be confused with" template should be used. Much thanks.--Cos1776 16:23, 29 June 2013 (EDT)

This issue starts with the 16 Oct 1770 Will of Henry SETTLE of Lunenburg Par, Richmond Co, VA in Will Book 7, p 117 [extracted p140 of Headley's Wills of Richmond Co, VA] included ... dau Anne BARTLETT ... and grand dau Joanna BARTLETT. Then the Will of Thomas BARTLETT, also of Lunenburg Par, Richmond Co, VA in Will Book 7, p 432 [also Headley p 160] included names of his five sons: John, James, Joseph, Thomas and Elijah. Years ago only Thomas BARTLETT Jr was well researched [I've researched him since 1974, and wrote a book which is now in the DAR Library about his life and descendants]. Per Fauquier Co, VA Deeds his first wife was Anne, and many assumed it was Anne SETTLE. However John BARTLETT also married an Anne. See 20 Jun 1791 Deed in Culpeper Co, VA from John BARTLEY [his name was spelled this way in Culpeper and Fluvanna Counties, and his descendants use this spelling to this day - another story] and Anne his wife sell land to Edward STEVENS. There is no known daughter of Thomas BARTLETT Jr named Joanna. John BARTLEY's 1 May 1807 Will in Fluvanna Co, VA includes... sons and daus of my deceased daughter Joanna BRAGG, proving he did have a dau Joanna. In addition three of John BARTLEY's daughters named their children: Nancy "Ann" Settle BALLENGER, Nancy "Ann" Settle PARRISH and Nancy EIDSON. In case anyone is wondering if John BARTLEY was really born John BARTLETT, I formed the BARTLETT DNA Project in 2002 to determine just that. We now have Y-DNA from 13 descendants of John, Joseph, Thomas [Jr] and Elisha [the first 3 left Richmond Co and Elisha stayed there] - they all match and are a very unusual haplotype: E1b. I think this is pretty conclusive proof that John BARTLETT married Anne SETTLE [probably in Lunenburg Par, Richmond Co, VA before they moved to Culpeper Co c1750.] We still need to look for the maiden name of Thomas BARTLETT's wife Anne.

FSFT GWD6-W1Z Thomas Bartlett [4 September 2021]

This Thomas Bartlett is currently GWD6-W1Z on FamilySearch Family Tree, but CAUTION as the Bartlett pages over there are a mess and they keep getting merged and changed willy-nilly as people upload their gedcoms and overwrite sourced facts and relationships. It is really frustrating! I wish they had a better notification system and placed more emphasis on sources. Anyhow ... I've tried to clean up over there several times, but I would bet that it will get undone again soon. Thanks for the vent ... --cos1776 14:45, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
