Facts and Events
Name[6] Thomas Barnard
Gender Male
Birth? 10 Aug 1617 Branstone, Isle of Wight, England
Marriage Abt 1638 Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts, United Statesto Eleanor Morse
Death? 7 Jul 1677 Amesbury, Essex, Massachusetts, United States
There is no real proof to the parentage of Thomas and Robert. Some think it was William and Emily (Nye) Barnard of Yorkshire Co., England. One of the ladies doing Barnard research says she had research done on the Wiltshire Barnards, but there was no way to tie them into the young men who emigrated to the colonies. She says a stronger case is made that the parents were Thomas and Ann (Cooke) Barnard of Suffolk Co.,England. Patricia Burns has done extensive research, and this line seems to be the most valid one.
The parentage of Robert of Andover and Thomas Barnard of Amesbury has not been proven. There have been several "genealogies" about the family that state their parentage, but at this time "NONE" of them have proven out. Research in England is still continuing.
Here are two books that might be helpful:

Thomas Barnard was born on August 10, 1617, possibly in Kingston, England. His parents may have been John Bernard and Phebe Whiting.(This information taken from an LDS pedigree and is undocumented).
Thomas married Eleanor Morse around 1640 in Salisbury, Mass. Thomas must have landed in New England sometime prior to this wedding date.
Thomas was a grand juror in Salisbury on 4/11/1665. Indians killed Thomas Barnard in 1677.

On 1/21/72, Ruth Barnard married Thomas' brother-in-law, Joseph Peaslee. Ruth and Joseph's first child, Mary, was conceived out of wedlock and born on 7/14/72. Consequently, at the quarterly court session at Salisbury on April 8,1673, "Joseph P. and Ruth, his wife, presented for fornication, confessed and were sentenced to be whipped tomorrow or pay a fine of 6 pounds". The record does not state which they choose.
Thomas was a "planter" or "husbandman". His name appears on nearly all the early lists, down to 1672 His widow Eleanor administered his estate Oct, 1677. She married July 19, 1681 George Little, of Newbury; and died November 27, 1694.

"I have found the descendants of Thomas Barnard in "The History of Nantucket". Thomas Barnard never removed to Nantucket although one of the original then purchasers. He was one of the early settlers of Amesbury,MA. He was one of the signatories to the articles of agreement between the inhabitants of the "Old Town: and the "New Town" in May 1654 in company with Thomas Macy, John Severance and others. He transferred on half of his share to his brother Robert and his son, Nathaniel represented him on the island in the other half share, Nathaniel who married Mary Barnard, daughter of his Uncle Robert. He was highly esteemed among the early inhabitants, and died in Nantucket.
Below is information from the gedcom of:
   James T Hammer

   712-225-1214
Thomas Barnard Sr. came to America from England about 1634 and was one of the ten original proprietors of Nantucket Island, which was purchased in 1659.
Some distinguished descendants of Thomas Barnard were:
Alonzo Cornell- 25th Governor of the state of New York
Ezra Cornell (Alonzo's father) was an associate of Samuel F.B. Morse (Morse Code) Ezra was the superintendent for the construction of the first telegraph line in America. He also founded Cornell University.
Thomas was killed by Indians in 1677, when he was 65 years old. He died intestate.
These notes are from information sent by James Ted Hammer; this version showing William E. Barnard as father to Thomas B. Barnard born 1612:
Barnard is a French and English variation of the surname Bernard, which has origins among the English,French,Polish, and Czechs, and is derived from the Germanic given name Bernhard, from the elements ber = bear + hard = brave, hardy. The name was introduced to England by the conquering Normans in 1066 (that was the date William won the battle;the name might have been introduced a day or two later.) Another source states that the surname "BARNARD" comes from the Saxon "bearn" or "bairn" which means,'a child-like disposition; and "ard", meaning nature'.
Mary Barnard published a book on Nantucket Barnard's-Nantucket Genesis. The big question is where the brothers Robert and Thomas come from and who was their father,William Barnard or Thomas Barnard Sr. She was unable to solve that problem. They both are apparently in Nantucket in the 1640's or earlier. These two questions have vexed Barnard genealogists for some time.
Thomas B Barnard waas born about 1580, in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, and died about 1677. Thomas married Margery Arnold on May 26, 1603, in Ilchester, Somersetshire, England. She was born on August 30, 1581, in Ilchester, Somersetshire, England and died on August 1, 1785, in England.
Others list the parents of Thomas and Robert Barnard as William E Barnard and Emily Nye of Branstone, Essex County,England.
I have chosen to show William Barnard and Emily Nye to be their parents because in the vital records of Essex, the estate papers of Robert Barnard's brother, Thomas B Barnard, Sr., specifically lists him as "Sr".I am assuming that if he carried the same name as his father he would have been called,"Jr" or "II".
Even though James Hammer shows William E. as the father of Robert and Thomas, I use Thomas B. as the primary and have also listed William and Emily as possible parents. I also have listed Thomas Barnard and Anne Cooke.

Most of this info is from Charles D Barnard at 5410 Bedford Ave,Los Angeles,CA.,90056-1009 and the Barnard Name Assn. From him I got the name of Dorcas Maurine Beaver of 1228 Southwood Drv.,Waco,TX.,76712; 817-772-9726.She is researching also with her line descending from the seconf Benjamin in line, born 30 July 1773 in NI.,MA;died 22 Dec 1792 in NC. He was married to Eunice G Fitch on 9 Jan 1755 in NI.,MA. The Barnards are a very illustrious line, descending from at least one Scottish King. There is still a Barnard Castle. The rest of this is from the files of U Dan Bates; R.R.2, Box 44, Mart,TX.,16664-9539. Thomas and Robert Barnard were two of the first twenty purchasers of Nantucket Island. Thomas never moved to Nantucket although one of the ten purchasers of the island. He was one of the founders of Amesbury. He was one of the signators of "Articles of Agreement", between inhabitants of "Old Town" and "New Town" on May 1754, in company of Thomas Macy, John Severance and others. He transferred half his share to his brother Robert and his son Nathaniel represented his interests on the island with the other half share. Nathaniel married Mary Barnard daughter of his Uncle Robert. He was highly esteemed amony the early inhabitants. From the files of Bailey Rogers, 10018 Regency Ct.,Cincinnati,OH. Thomas was killed by indians in 1677, at age 65.in Amesbury, MA. Estate also from the files of Bailey Rogers, estate administered Oct. 16, 1677.Estate divided among the children in 1679.
Other distinguished descendants of Robert are Alonzo Cornell, 25th Gov. of New York state. Alonzo's father was an associate of Samuel F Morse (Morse Code) and Ezra was Superintendent of the first telegraph line in the country. He also founded Cornell University.

All this below is from Grandpa Frank Barnard:
The Barnard Family were Quakers that came from England in the late 1630's. Two brothers came and we are related to both. The daughter of one married the son of the other. Some six generations later, Matilda Barnard married Henry Canaday in Guilford Co., North Carolina in 1796.
Matilda's parents were Benjamin Barnard and Eunice Fitch. Through Eunice Fitch Barnard's mother, we are related to John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. Both of whom arrived in America at Plymouth, Massachusetts aboard the MAYFLOWER in 1622.
The family was Quaker. They began living in Andover and Amesbury, north of Boston, but soon moved to the island of Nantucket. From there they migrated to new Quaker communities in central North Carolina and it was there that they became a part of the Canaday Family.
Thomas was the elder of the two brothers. He was born about 1612 in England. Some sources hint he was from Brandstone Parish in either Suffolk or Essex. However, researchers have not been able to find any proof in the registers of either parish. We may assume he and his brother were English, but as of now I do not exactly know where they lived.
Again may sources state the brothers came to America in 1650. Yet Thomas is shown on an old map as being a landholder in Salisbury, Massachusetts in 1639. Later the family also bought land a few miles away in neighboring Amesbury, Massachusetts.
Thomas seems to have had lands in both Salisbury and Amesbury. The children were all born in Salisbury, but he appears in early Amesbury records by 1660 and then in the records of both towns( NP, I am of the understanding that Salisbury and Amesbury are one and the same, that they changed Amesbury to Salisbury). Perhaps all the lands lay on the border and spilled over into both towns.
Thomas was one of the original purchasers of Nantucket Island in 1659. He gave ahalf interest to his brother Robert. It does not appear that he ever went to the island, but Robert did in 1663.
Thomas was killed by Indians in Amesbury in October of 1667. His estate was settled in 1679. Eleanor Barnard remained in the area and on July 19, 1681 she married George Little of Newbury.
