Susan Sarah Moles was born in 1876 in Hertfordshire. She was baptised on 9th January 1878 at Bygrave in Hertfordshire, daughter of a straw plaiter named Emma Moles, formerly Rook, and her husband George Moles, a shepherd. She was not a baby when baptised, but was nearly two years old. Although the family lived in the parish of Bygrave and had her baptised at Bygrave church, they actually lived on Norton Street, the bit of the parish right on the edge of the town of Baldock.

Susan Sarah appears to have been named after two of her older sisters, who had died within a few days of each other in an outbreak of scarlet fever in 1864. Sadly, Susan Sarah also died young, being buried a few days after her baptism. She was probably already ill when baptised, as it was a private baptism. Her burial record says she was 22 months old when she died.
