Sadly the family was affected by scarlet fever in 1864. Susan's five year old sister Sarah was buried on 23rd August. Susan also died of the illness and was buried four days after her sister. She was only three years old.

Fourteen years later George and Emma had a daughter who they named Sarah Susan, after the two girls who had died of scarlet fever.
