Sarah Moles was born in 1859 at Biggleswade in Bedfordshire, and baptised on 1st Mary 1859 at Willian in Hertfordshire, daughter of a straw plaiter named Emma Moles, formerly Rook, and her husband George Moles, a shepherd. Sadly the family was affected by scarlet fever in 1864, and Sarah died aged five, and was buried on 23rd August at Willian. Four days later her three year old sister was also buried at Willian, both girls having died of scarlet fever.

Fourteen years later George and Emma had a daughter who they named Sarah Susan, after the two girls who had died of scarlet fever.
