Stokeley Towles was born in Accomack County on Virginia's Eastern Shore. He grew up on Chincoteaque Island. As a young man, he moved to Middlesex County where he married his first wife, Ann Vallott in 1708. She was the daughter of Claud Vallott alias Champagne and Ann Jenkinson. She was only 15 years old when they married. She was the mother of 13 of his children. In 1737, he bought land in Orange County (later Culpeper, now Madison) on the Robinson River by Thoroughfare Mountain. By 1748 his first wife had died and married the widow Jane Wharton, nee Sparks, by whom two more children (a second daughter Mary and a second son Henry, who are distinguished from their older siblings by the term "second of the name."
