A great granddaughter of Seth and Mary Evans, Elsie Utley, said that the family were members of the Primitive Baptist Church, known at that time as Hard-Shell Baptists. Moreover, they were known for their respect for the older members of the family. They were also extremely polite to others.

According to the family of Zeb Utley, grandson of Seth Evans, Seth operated a turpentine mill and a grist mill. This is the stated reason he did not go the war between the states. Grandfather Evans was a Republican and was one of the few individuals in the area of Piney Woods to take a newspaper.
