Under the terms of his father's will, Samuel went to live with his uncle Samuel in Glastonbury. However, unlike his brother Robert, he did not settle there, instead returning to the Stratford area where he apparently settled in the Stratfield parish that then covered areas of both Stratford and Fairfield and today is the city of Bridgeport. He served as a sergeant in the Stratfield trainband (FOOF 1:658). …
The estate of Samuel Welles was settled by his heirs on 11 March 1728/29 when an agreement to an equitable distribution was made by Samuel Wells, Thomas Turney in right of his wife Abigaill, John Hubbell in right of his wife Ann, and John Clugstone in right of his wife Elizabeth, agreeing first to set off the dower third to the widow Abigail 'our Mother in Law.' On 12 March 1728/29 in Fairfield Probate District Court, Fairfield, Connecticut, Samuel Wells was appointed adminstrator. He posted a bond with John Clugstone of Stamford as surety. The inventory was taken by Joseph Booth and Gideon Hawley and came to £247:17:07. It was submitted to the court by Samuel Wells on 3 June 1729. The probate package includes the distribution of the estate which notes that Samuel Wells, Sr., was of Stratfield, but this distribution is not dated (Fairfield Probate District, Connecticut Estate Files, docket no. 6760)."
