Will

Will of Samuel Black, dated Jul 25, 1770 in Albermarle Co VA mentioned his wife Catherine (executrix) and children in the following order which may be their birth order:

To wife Catherine, 50 pounds currency and mansion house where she is to be maintained.
To son Samuel, 250 acres of a tract purchased from Richard Stockton and negroes.
To son James, remainder of above tract and 20 pounds of currency.
To daughter Margaret, currency.
To daughter Mary, currency.
To daughter Sarah, currency.
To son John, half of the plantation "where I now live" and currency.
To son William, half of the plantation "I now live on" and currency.

"At Albemarle Court November 1770. This last will and testament of Samuel Black, deceased, was presented in court and proved by the oath of Charles Patrick and Joseph Kinkead witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded, and at the motion of Samuel Black, Jr. Executor therein named, probate is granted him for obtaining letters of administration, who gave bond with Joseph Kinkead and Charles Patrick his securities." Samuel was educated at Edinburgh and licensed to preach at Glasgow. He was pastor of Brandywine Manor Presbyterian Church in Chester County PA, but in 1743 he came to visit his brother John in Augusta Co VA, and for 4 yrs. traveled as a missionary among the Scotch-Irish in the area. He later moved to Albemarle County VA where he married. In 1751 he purchased 400 acres of land on Meechum's River, where he made his home until his death in 1770.
