Facts and Events
Rose May Mitchell was born on 11th April 1899 at 19 Rileys Court in Rugby, Warwickshire. She was the daughter of Harriet Mitchell, formerly Bastock. Her birth and baptism records suggest that Rose's father was Harriet's husband, Alfred Mitchell. However, Rose's death certificate says that she was the daughter of an 'Edward Scholes Mitchell'. Looking at the 1901 census we find that Harriet was living with a man named Edward Scholes Feary, whilst her husband Alfred Mitchell was living in the Coventry Union Workhouse, apparently disabled. Rose was the first of a series of six children Harriet had between 1899 and 1904 who appear to have actually been Edward Scholes Feary's children, not Alfred Mitchell's.
Rileys Court in Rugby was a courtyard of about twenty small houses tucked behind the buildings facing Dunchurch Road near the corner with Warwick Street. The entrance to Rileys Court was almost opposite Rugby School's chapel. The family did not stay long in Rugby after Rose's birth. By the following year they had moved to Coventry (where Harriet had been living with her husband and sons before having Rose). In Coventry they lived at house 11 in Court 2, Thomas Street. It was here that young Rose sadly died on 21st August 1900, aged just sixteen months, of diarrhoea.
