Florence Maud Feary was born on 9th August 1903 in Coventry, Warwickshire, and baptised there at St Thomas's Church the following month. She was the daughter of Harriet Mitchell, formerly Bastock, and a motor engineer named Edward Scholes Feary. As Florence's parents were not married her birth was registered as Florence Maud Feary Mitchell. The family lived at house 2 in Court 11, Thomas Street, a small back-to-back house facing a courtyard that could only be accessed through a narrow arch between 82 and 83 Thomas Street.

Florence has yet to be traced after her baptism. Her mother died in 1909, and Florence does not appear in the 1911 census with her father.
