James Hill of Northumberland County, Virginia, planter to son Robert Hill and his heirs, all right and title to a certain parcel of land on the Eastern Branch of the Corotoman in Lancaster County. Witnessed by John Insbrook and Richard ---ing. Recorded SEP 1793. Lancaster County Deeds & Wills #7, p. 75. (Examined, Circuit Clerk's office). 6 AUG 1698. Lancaster County. Inventory of estate of Robert Hill. One bull, 3 yearlings, 4 cows and calves, 22 red hogs, 339 foot of plank, 1 saddle (but no horse), 1 canoe. No slaves. Total value £13 75s 7d. Appraisers: James Hill } Richard Stephens Tho: Parfitt } Christopher Kirk I am not sure if all four were appraisers, or those in the first column were administrators. I need to look up the Court Order Book entry for the administration of this estate. Richard Stephens was his wife's uncle (see below). In this inventory, inserted near the end is this remark: "Given to James Hill the son of Robert Hill dec'd by his grandfather James Hill, one silver spoon, and by his grandfather Tho: Buckley given to him a small gold ring, And a cradle and silver bodkin given unto Mary Hill by her mother Mary Hill deceased." Upon the death of his wife Frances, the care of bringing up James, William and Frances Hill to go to Richard Stephens and his wife Hannah. Note that this list of children does not include Mary Hill mentioned in Robert Hill's inventory. She had perhaps married by this date, possibly to John Chilton, "son". Executrix was wife Frances, with Richard Stephens and John Chilton "overseers." Witnessed by John Mullis, Richard Stephens and Jane Foster. Robert Hill is among 154 men on this list: "May it please your Excellency--In Obedience to your Excellency's directed to this Court for the returneing an Accompt of all persons that are able to bear Armes both Horse and Foot Service in this County, wee have duely examined a List of Freeholders [land owners] and House Keepers [tenants] inhabiting in our said County and wee doe finde upon or: due inquirey that many of them are very poore, despicable persons. We have returned yor: Excellency the full number exprest by yor: Order as followeth:.... The first list is persons appointed for horse service. The second list is for those appointed for foot service. Robert Hill is on this second list. So is Christopher Kirk (on the Pollard line). p. 35 (citing p. 81). 9 MAY 1688. Robert Hill on a jury empaneled to hear the suit of William Garton vs. William Hartland concerning land on in Nantapoyson (now called Antipoison) running into Fleet's Bay. Robert Hill on a jury in suit of Mr. Mottrom Wright vs. Mr. Richard Willis "for using several houses of the said Wright's about 4 months" finding Wright damaged to amount of 1,200 pounds of tobacco and cask. Others on this jury were Robert Pollard and Christopher Kirk. Note: The term "Mr." was a term applied to those one social level above the yeoman (aka "goodman"), and denoted a certain degree of respect in the community. "A probate of ye Last Will and Testament of Joseph [? Gleve] is granted unto James Rotherham which will annexed on behalfe of Mary Hill according to ye tenor thereof." Note: I am not sure exactly what this about it, but it seems possible that this Mary Hill was the widow of Robert Hill. Thomas Martin and Richard Flint vs. Thomas Buckley, administrator of the estate of Robert Hill. Martin and Flint were securities to Buckley's administration bond for the estate of Robert Flint, and desire to be released from their bonds. Richard Stephens vs. Elmore George, having exhibited in court the last will and testament of Thomas Buckley.
