p. 61 20 JUL 1660. James Hill, and william Jeffars were witnesses to a Power of Attorney from Gervase Dodson to James Pope to acknowledge his sale of 150 acres of land to Ribhard Gible, and 100 acres of land to David Orland, as will appear in his assignment of patent (Sporacios, Deed and Will Abstracts 1658-1662. p. 61; Antient Press, 1993). Gervase Dodson was a surveyor, land speculator and a trader with the Wiccocomico Indians.

James Hill to Thomas Davis and Daniel Bixby, 150 acres of land "being part of the Devident of Land I now live on, bounded by said Davis & Bixby, being in Wicocomoco [Wicomoco Parish], both parties to have rights to timer the entire divident, and if Hill should sell the remaining acreage Davis and Bixby to have first right of refusal. Witnessed by Leod: Howson and John Knight. Jone Hill relinquishes her dower 26 JAN 1662/63, and makes Peter Knight her attorney in fact, witnessed by Leonard Howson and Thomas Ford. James Pope, sale of land to ______ (need previous page), witnesed by Leo: Howson and John Southerland, James Pope reserving a peice of land of 40 sq. ft. and timber on which to build a house. 20 May 1661. Land Patent to James Hill for 350 acres of land on the south side of Great Wicocomico [River] in the woods between lands surveyed for Jno. Fawsett, Freeman Connoway, John Howard and the lands surveyed for Jno. Hewlett and Thomas Read, but only patented by Thomas Reade, and land Patent for Isaac Foxcroft being 2000 acres and afterwards sold to Thomas Prittyman, land of Jown Fawsett, DUE UNTO JAMES HILL for transportation of 7 persons who are named in the patent. James Hill assigned this tract to Jno. Taylor on 20 AUG 1667. Witnessed by Leonard Howson, Sim: Thompson. Recorded 11 JAN 1668/1669. (RB 5, p. 70).

p. 10-11. 14 SEP 1670. James Pope to Josias Draper, PART of a tract of 790 acres patented to James Pope and James Hill [see below, that patent was dated18 APR 1668]. Bounded on the south by Col.Lee (on Machohotick Path), Richard Aliff now Josias Draper whereon he now lives, , to where a branch which empties into the Western Branch of the Curotoman River. Witnessed by Jno: Robinson and Jno: Southerland. Recorded 24 FEB 1670/71 (RB 6, p. 161-162)

p. 91. Court Order of 18 MAY 1710. Survey for William and Charles Coppadge, per will of their late father. Surveyed 5 JUN 1710, Thomas Eyes and John Mew chain carriers, land in Great Wiccocomoco Parish on the main brances of Scotland Mill Swamp, (see being a part of a patent to James Hill dated 10 MAY 1661 for 350 acres and sold by said Hill to Thomas Davis & Daniel Bixbee (see above) and by them sold to William Coppedge late of this county, the other part of the patent being sold by said Hill to Mr. Thomas Burbery and now in the possession of Mr. Malachi Burbery; bounded by line of Foxcroft, between the heads of two branches that issue out of the Eastward Swamp of Fishing Creek on Howsons Creek, John Copedge, Greene Branch, Wolfe Pit Neck, Webb's Branch, Richard Webb, Mr. Burbery. Surveyed by John Copedge, surveyor of Northumberland County Witnessed by Mr. Malachi Burbery, Mr. Ambrose Fielding, Mr. Richard Hackne and John Copedge. Recorded 22 JUN 1710. Memorandum: Original Survey and division was presented to the court by Mr. William Copede, and the record "being burnt", ordred to be re-recorded. (RB 6, p. 49-51)

p. 107. 3 SEP 1708. Deed from John Donaway [Dunaway] of Great Wiccocomoco Parish, planter, Stephen Chilton Jr., John Chilton and Mary his wife, all of Christ Church Parish, Lancaster County, for 4,600 lbs tobacco, 100 acres in Great Wiccocomico Parish on a branch of the Holly Path and Matchotique Path being part of a patent to Josias Draper, James Pope and James Hill in co-partnership, and by them divided into 3 equal parts of 100 acres each, the said James Pope selling his 100 acres to John Bound on 6 JAN 166-, and by John Bound sold to one John Bennet, who died without heirs and whose widow married John Ingoe and who patented it again on 6 JUL 1695 [this patent is not among those recorded with Colonial Land Patents. Ingo is a Richmond County name] and by Ingo sold to Benjamin Brown and by Brownd sold to the said John Dunaway. Witnessed by Jos: Tayloe, Benja: Brown, George Brent. Margaret Brown reliinquishes dower, recorded 17 NOV 1708 (RB 6, p. 6-8).

p. 108. 15 JUN 1709. James Hill of Great Wiccocomoco Parish to John Chilton and Mary his wife, and Stephen Chilton, Jr., 100 acres of land for 3,000 lbs of tobacco in cask, and one ox cart, land where John Dunaway lately lived on Matchotique Path and Draper's Branch, Richard Kay, Wife of James Hill in this deed is given as JOSAN. No relinquishment of her dower recorded with the deed. Witnessed by Joseph Taloe, Walter Pasquett, and James Mitchell. Recordd 15 JUN 1709 (RB 6, p. 78-80).

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, VA LAND PATENTS

18 APR 1668. James Hill and James Pope patented 790 acres in Northumberland County at the head and south side of the Great Wicomico River, beginning on the north side of a branch of said river called Pop'es Swamp., dividing this land from the land of Dr. Edward Saunders. Beginning at land of Richard Ilife, to a branch of Corotomon River nigh Machoatick path to "their other lands." Due for the transportation of16 persons, including James Hill. Note: 10 acres due (PB 6, p. 119 from Nugent, Vol. II, p. 33).

18 APR 1668. James Pope, patent for 150 acres on south side of the main branch of the Great Wicomico, beginning in a branch of Pope's Swamp divising this land from Dr. Edward Saunders. Transportation of 3 person including James Hill. (PB 6, p. 121 from Nugent, Vol. II, p. 33).

20 JUN 1666. Patent to JAMES HILL for 100 acres in Northumberland County upon the head of the Wiccocomoco River, due for transportation of Jno. Cale and Emy Portey. (PB 6, p. 347 from Nugent, Vol. II, p. 90).

p. 21 MAR 1676/77. Administration on the estate of James Pope granted to Dorcas Pope, bond in the sum of 50,000 pounds of tobacco, with John Hughlett and Thomas Marshall her securities. Appraisers appointed were James Hill, Dennis Eyse, Dennis Conoway and Edmund Basye, any three of them. _________________

p. 31 19 MAR 1677/78. James Hill on jury in suit of Capt. John Mottrom vs. Richard Smyth (p. 352). John Mottrom, like Gervase Dodson, was another person involved in land speculation and Indian trading.

21 15 JANUARY 1678/79. Complaint to the court that JOHN HIGGINSON had married the relict (widow) of JAMES POPE [Dorcas], and "has much impaired the Estate of the children of the said POPE, ordered that Higginson appear at the next court to answer.

p. 31 7 JUNE 1679. The tithables of the county were divided in "groups of forties" and each group was to outfit and supply an able bodied man and horse with a case of pistols, carbine, sword, 85 bushels of Indian corn, 80 pound of dried pork or bacon, and said provisions to be taken to the home of an appointed person within the county.

The precincts were (1) Mattapony & Upper Precincts, Mr. Thomas Mathew; (2) "The rest of Boistracy Parish to Mr. Richard Kenner; (3) Newman's Neck "and that edibles promised" to the house of Peter Presly, Sr; (4) Little Wicomico Parish and North side of Great Wicomico to Maj Thomas Brereton; (5) the rest of Fairfield Parish to William Downing, Jr.; (6) All of Wicomico Parish to the house of Capt. William Downing.

The list of tithables follows, with the person resonsible for the tithe (white males over 16) followed by the number of tithables for whom he was chargeable. James Hill was in the following "forty" (each group actually contained 48 men):

p. 121 15 FEB 1682/83. Richard Cox vs. ROBERT HILL. Judgment against Hill for 340 lbs. tobacco and cask, levied on a colt of Robert Hill, with surplus value of the colt to be paid to Hill.

p.181 19 APRIL 1683. JAMES HILL on the jury with Mr. William Jones, Mr. Peter Presley, John Bryant, Robert Bryery, Henry Dawson, George Dawkins, Thomas Hughlett, John Curtis, Addam Yarrat (Adam Yarret), James Claughton and William Hartland. Land ownership was a prerequisite of jury duty.

p. 464 15 MAY 1689. James Hill and 17 others had been summoned on a grand inquest, and seven of them (not including Hill) failed to appear, were fined.

p. 520 19 NOV 1690. JAMES HILL deposed that Henry Hartley "confirmed" that he had heard Roger Oneale drink a "health to the Confusion of King William...." Oneale ordered to be taken into safe custody until the next day when Hartley would be summoned to court to give witness.

p. 524 20 NOV 1690. The next day. Whereas James Hill had confirmed that he heard Henry Hartley say that Roger Oneale had drunk a health to the confusion of King William and Queen Mary. Hartley now appearing in court swore that he heard Walter Eustace and Fayth Nayler wife of Thomas Nayler say that THEY heard the said Roger Oneale drink to the said health. And since Oneale had "contempuously resisted the authority [of his arrest] struck the under sheriff who took him into custody. Therefore, the sheriff to take him back into custody and give good security for his good behavior and appearance the next Court to answer the charges.

p. 842 16 NOV 1698. ELIZABETH BURKE, servant of JAMES HILL, brought to court and adjudged to be age 15 years, and ordered to serve her master according to law (i.e., until age 21).


EZEKIEL AND ROBERT HILL

p. 459 21 FEB 1688/89. Robert Hill, brother of Ezekiel Hill, against Partin Hudnall referred to next court.

p. 470 22 MAY 1689. Partin Hudnall had been summoned to court at the suit of Robert Hill brother of Ezekiel Hill for 4,511 pounds of tobacco and cask, and Hudnall failing to answer the suit judgment is granted to Hill.

p. 473 18 JUL 1689. Whereas Robert Hill brother of Ezekiel Hill obtained an order of 4,511 pounds of tobacco and cask against Partin Hudnall and Hudnall still answering the suit, ordered that the sheriff pay Robert Hill the tobacco and execute a lien against the estate of Partin Hudnall.

pp. 479-480 6 NOV 1689. Ezekiel HILL and Partin Hudnall had been devised land on the south side of Great Wicomico [river] to be equally divided between them in the will of Ezekial GENSIS provided they would pay his debts. Said Ezekial Hill died before a division of the land had been made, and had paid the 4,5111 pounds of tobacco towards the debts, and his brother ROBERT HILL, heir became the owner of this half of the land. (This suit was initiated 21 FEB 1688/89, p. 459.) Partin appealed through his attorney Richard Haynie. JAMES HILL, with William Harcum security, posted bond for ROBERT HILL to answer the appeal. _____________________________

LANCASTER COUNTY, VIRGINIA--LAND

James Hill purchased 85.5 acres of land in Christ Church Parish, Lancaster County from Roger Williams on 13 JUN 1681, which, as a resident of Northumberland County, he gifted to his son Robert Hill on 1 Sep 1693 (Lancaster DW 7, p. 75).

Sparacios, Deed & Will Abstracts of Lancaster County, Virginia 1661-1702 (1991). The title is a misnomer, it is compilation of various loose records in this period thrown into one book by the clerk in 1740 and bound.
