Robert Bowden was born on 9th May 1844 at Tiverton in Devon, son of Sarah Bowden, formerly May, and her husband William Bowden, an agricultural labourer. Shortly after Robert's birth the family left Tiverton and moved to Loxbeare, where Robert's younger two siblings were born in 1846 and 1849, although his younger sister died when only one year old.
The 1851 census finds Robert living with his parents, his two brothers and his maternal grandmother at Pantacridge in the parish of Loxbeare. His grandmother died in 1857. In 1859, when Robert was fifteen years old, his father William died. About eighteen months later Robert's mother married again to an agricultural labourer named William Tucker, who thus became Robert's stepfather. The 1861 census finds Robert living with his mother and stepfather at Lower Park in Cruwys Morchard.
In 1867, aged 23, Robert married Lovedy Bryant. They appear to have had at least eight children. The 1871 census finds them living on East Lane in Cruwys Morchard, with Robert working as an agricultural labourer. By 1881 they had moved to Puddington, and they had Robert's mother and stepfather living with them. Robert's brother Henry and his family were living next door at the time of the 1881 census. Robert's stepfather died later that year, and his mother died in 1885. Robert, Lovedy and their children were still living in Puddington in the 1891 census, when they were described as living in a cottage with five or more rooms. By this time Robert was working as a gardener.
Some time between 1891 and 1901 Robert and his family left Puddington and moved to Gunhole in the parish of Witheridge. Lovedy died in 1904, aged 53. The 1911 census finds Robert living with his daughter Annie as housekeeper at Bradford in Witheridge. Robert survived Lovedy by eighteen years. He died in 1922, aged about 78.
