William Bowden was born on 9th June 1805 at Loxbeare in Devon, son of a yeoman named John Bowden and his wife Susanna.

William appears to have been married and widowed young, but details of his first marriage have yet to be ascertained. The 1841 census finds William living with his elderly parents and siblings at Loxbeare.

In 1842 William married again. His second wife was Sarah May from Templeton. They had three sons and a daughter together between 1843 and 1849, but the daughter died when she was only one year old. The 1851 census finds William, Sarah and their three sons living at Pantacridge in Loxbeare, along with Sarah's mother. At this time William was described as an agricultural labourer.

William died in 1859, aged 54. Sarah outlived him by 26 years and remarried a couple of years after his death.
