Henry John Bowden was baptised on 8th November 1846 at Loxbeare in Devon, son of Sarah Bowden, formerly May, and her husband William Bowden, an agricultural labourer. Henry John appears to have been known by his middle name, often appearing in the censuses simply as John. The 1851 census finds him living at Pantacridge in the parish of Loxbeare with his parents, siblings and maternal grandmother. His maternal grandmother died in 1857.

John's father died in 1859, when John was about thirteen years old. Just over a year later his mother married again, with a William Tucker becoming John's stepfather.

The 1861 census finds John working as a carter at a farm at Littleheath in the parish of Cruwys Morchard. Some time between 1861 and 1871 John married an Elizabeth from Cruwys Morchard and they moved to Puddington. Each of the censuses from 1871 to 1911 find John and Elizabeth living in Puddington. John's mother and stepfather and his brother Robert and family were living next door in 1881. John's mother died in 1885.

In the 1911 census John and Elizabeth reported that they had had ten children, five of whom were then still living.

John appears to have died in 1935, aged 88.
