Richard Singleton was born on 8th March 1859 at Allington in Lincolnshire, son of Eliza Worth Singleton, formerly Bonser, and her husband Robert Singleton, a coachman and groom. Richard was the seventh of eleven children. The family stayed at Allington until late 1871 or early 1872, when they moved to Aston on Trent in Derbyshire. Whilst living there, Richard's mother Eliza died, aged 42. Richard was 13 when his mother died.
Richard's next sighting is on 14th April 1884, aged 25, when he married Mary Ann Garrett at Reigate in Surrey. For reasons which are not clear he gave his name as George when they married, yet in all other records appears as Richard. They went on to have one daughter, Mary Edith, the following year, who was born in the Dulwich / Tulse Hill area of the southern suburbs of London.
The 1891 census finds the family living in Dulwich, with Richard working as a coachman and groom.
By 1901 the family was living at 44 Tamworth Road in Croydon, a shop on the west side of the town centre, where Richard worked as a general grocery dealer. Richard's father died later in 1901 at Bainton in Northamptonshire.
Richard and Mary and their daughter were still living at 44 Tamworth Road in Croydon in 1911, when Mary was described as the shopkeeper, their daughter was assisting the business, and Richard was working as a coachman for the livery stables of a cab proprietor.
At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Richard and Mary were living at 2 Windborough Road in Carshalton, a relatively recently built semi-detached house. They were living there with their daughter and her husband (who do not appear to have had any children). Both Richard and Mary were described as incapacitated.
Mary died in 1940, aged 82. Richard survived her by nearly nine years. He died on 4th July 1949 at Carshalton, aged 90. He was buried at London's South Metropolitan Cemetery was West Norwood.
