Mary Elizabeth Singleton was born in 1850 at Allington in Lincolnshire, the third of eleven children of Eliza Worth Singleton, formerly Bonser, and her husband Robert Singleton, a coachman and groom. Mary Elizabeth grew up in Allington, appearing in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living at West Allington with her parents and siblings.

By 1871 she had left home and was working as a laundry maid at Ribston Hall in Yorkshire, home of John Dent Dent, a Liberal politician, who was Member of Parliament for Scarborough. She gave her name as Elizabeth Mary in the 1871 census and on other occasions gave it just as Elizabeth, suggesting she was known by her middle name.

Elizabeth's parents and siblings were still at Allington in 1871, but moved either late in 1871 or 1872, because by November 1872 they were living at Aston on Trent in Derbyshire, when Elizabeth's mother Eliza died, aged 46.

The following year, on 15th December 1873, aged 23, Elizabeth was married to a gardener named John Warrior. He had been at the Ribston Hall estate in 1871 when Elizabeth had been working there. They did not marry locally to Ribston Hall, but at Aston on Trent, where her father was living. Elizabeth's older brother and his wife were the witnesses to the marriage.

After their marriage they initially lived at West Tanfield, north of Ripon, having seven children there between their marriage and 1884. Around 1881 the family was clearly struck with illness; the census finds John at a Sanatorium in Bournemouth, nearly 300 miles away from Elizabeth and the children in West Tanfield. Their eldest daughter died aged seven shortly afterwards. John clearly recovered and later returned to join the family in Yorkshire again.

The family moved around various big estates in this part of Yorkshire, presumably following John's work as a domestic gardener. By 1891 they had moved to the Aldburgh Hall estate just outside the small town of Masham, and a couple of miles west of West Tanfield. They had moved again by 1901, to Park House at Snape, about four miles north of West Tanfield. They were still at Snape in 1911.

Elizabeth's father died in 1901 at Bainton in Northamptonshire.

John died aged 77 in 1928 in the town of Keighley, nearly 40 miles to the south-west of West Tanfield and Snape. He was buried back at West Tanfield. Elizabeth survived him by nearly four years. She went to live with her youngest daughter Kate and her husband who had moved to Flixton near Manchester. Elizabeth died at Flixton on 30th June 1932. She was buried four days later at West Tanfield. She was 82 years old.
