John Warrior was born in 1850 in the township of North Stainley with Sleningford in the parish of Ripon in Yorkshire, son of Mary Warrior, formerly Barker, and her husband Thomas Warrior, a gardener. The 1851 census finds John living with his parents and siblings at Sleningford Mill there. By 1861 they had moved to the neighbouring village of West Tanfield.

By 1871 John had left home and was working as a gardener on the Ribston Hall estate, about 17 miles south of West Tanfield.

On 15th December 1873, aged 23, John married Mary Elizabeth Singleton (who appears to have been known by her middle name). She had also been working at Ribston Hall as a laundry maid in the 1871 census, but they married nearly 80 miles south of Ribston Hall at Aston on Trent in Derbyshire, where Elizabeth's father was living at the time.

After their marriage they initially lived at West Tanfield, having seven children there between their marriage and 1884. Around 1881 the family was clearly struck with illness; the census finds John at a Sanatorium in Bournemouth, nearly 300 miles away from Elizabeth and the children in West Tanfield. Their eldest daughter died aged seven shortly afterwards. John clearly recovered and later returned to join the family in Yorkshire again.

The family moved around various big estates in this part of Yorkshire, presumably following John's work as a domestic gardener. By 1891 they had moved to the Aldburgh Hall estate just outside the small town of Masham, and a couple of miles west of West Tanfield. They had moved again by 1901, to Park House at Snape, about four miles north of West Tanfield. They were still at Snape in 1911.

By 1928 John had moved to the town of Keighley, nearly 40 miles to the south-west of West Tanfield and Snape. He died at home at 2 Margaret Street in Keighley on 31st October 1928, aged 77. He was buried back at West Tanfield. Elizabeth survived him by nearly four years.
