Frederick Singleton was born on 1st Augsut 1864 at Allington in Lincolnshire, the ninth of eleven children of Eliza Worth Singleton, formerly Bonser, and her husband Robert Singleton, a coachman and groom. Frederick's early childhood was spent in Allington, with the family still there in August 1871 when his younger sister Ada Jane was born. By November 1872 the family had moved away to Aston on Trent in Derbyshire, when Frederick's mother Eliza died, aged 46. He was eight when she died. After Eliza's death, the family seems to have dispersed - Robert and his two youngest daughters were living together in Bainton, Northamptonshire by the 1881 census, whilst the older children were all spread out.
By 1881, Frederick was living with his brother Bonser in Nottingham. They were both working as boot makers. Frederick next appears in the 1891 census in Sheffield working as a shoe maker.
By 1901 Frederick was living at 9 Thompson Street in Levenshulme, to the south of Manchester, where he lived with a Mary Hawley as though married, although no marriage record has been found for them. They also gave their surname as Smith in the 1901 census, suggesting they were reluctant to give their real names. Perhaps one of them was married to someone else.
Frederick's father died at Bainton later in 1901.
Frederick and Mary went on to have two children together: a daughter called Elsie in 1902 and a son called Albert in 1903. Both were born at home at 9 Thompson Street. Elsie's birth certificate gives Mary's maiden name as Hawley, whilst Albert's birth certificate gives her maiden name as Hall.
By 1908 the family had moved about two miles south-west to Queen Street in Withington, just off the Wilmslow Road.
On 1st July 1908, Mary died at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. She was said to be 42 years old. The 1911 census finds Frederick living with their two children on Wilmslow Road in Withington, describing himself as a widower.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Frederick was living at 66 Pemberton Street in Manchester with his son and granddaughter. He was described as incapacitated at the time. Frederick died in Manchester in 1941, aged 77.
