Facts and Events
Mary Hawley or Hall's origins have yet to be established. She indicated that she was born around the late 1860s in Liverpool, but her first confirmed sighting is not until 1901, when she was living with a shoe maker called Frederick Singleton at 9 Thompson Street in Levenshulme, just south of Manchester. They do not appear to have been married, and used the surname Smith in the 1901 census, suggesting they were reluctant to give their real names. Perhaps one of them was married to someone else.
Mary and Frederick went on to have two children together: a daughter called Elsie in 1902 and a son called Albert in 1903. Both were born at home at 9 Thompson Street. Elsie's birth certificate gives Mary's maiden name as Hawley, whilst Albert's birth certificate gives her maiden name as Hall.
By 1908 the family had moved about two miles south-west to Queen Street in Withington, just off the Wilmslow Road.
On 1st July 1908, Mary died at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. She was said to be 42 years old. The 1911 census finds Frederick living with their two children on Wilmslow Road in Withington, describing himself as a widower. He survived Mary by about 33 years.

Although the name is here given as Smith, it is considered likely that this is nevertheless Fred and Mary Singleton, whose daughter Elsie's baptism the following year gives their address as 9 Thompson Street, and Fred was a shoe maker. As no marriage record for them has been found, the use of the common name 'Smith' may have been a deliberate attempt to be slightly more circumspect as to their identities.
