Mary Ann Garrett was born on 6th November 1857 at Slaugham in Sussex, daughter of Patience Garrett, formerly Godsmark or Rowland[11], and her husband William Garrett, an agricultural labourer and farm bailiff. When Mary was still quite young the family moved about five miles south to the village of Bolney, where they appear in the 1861 census. As an adult Mary generally gave her place of birth as Bolney.

The family moved again in the 1860s, firstly to Worth, then to Lingfield in Surrey. The 1871 census finds the family living at Pelthams, a hamlet to the east of Lingfield village.

By 1881 Mary Ann was working as cook for a clergyman and schoolmaster in Brighton, living in a big house on Sussex Square in the centre of the town with 23 schoolboys boarding there.

On 14th April 1884, Mary Ann married Richard Singleton at Reigate in Surrey. For reasons which are not clear he gave his name as George when they married, yet in all other records appears as Richard. They went on to have one daughter, Mary Edith, the following year, who was born in the Dulwich / Tulse Hill area of the southern suburbs of London.

The 1891 census finds the family living in Dulwich, with Richard working as a coachman and groom.

By 1901 the family was living at 44 Tamworth Road in Croydon, a shop on the west side of the town centre, where Richard worked as a general grocery dealer. They were still at 44 Tamworth Road in 1911, when Mary was described as the shopkeeper, their daughter was assisting the business, and Richard was working as a coachman for the livery stables of a cab proprietor.

At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Mary and Richard were living at 2 Windborough Road in Carshalton, a relatively recently built semi-detached house. They were living there with their daughter and her husband (who do not appear to have had any children). Both Mary and Richard were described as incapacitated.

Mary died in 1940, aged 82. She was buried at London's South Metropolitan Cemetery at West Norwood on 29th August 1940. Richard survived her by nearly nine years.
