According to the Shankland Family Research by Albert Shankland, Oscar married first Anna James (1843 PA - 1866) and had one child. This could be the Ella/Ellen living with his parents in 1870, and his mother and sister in 1880. He married Mary Catherine Bart (1855 NY - 1937) in 1874 and had 6 children.

 According to 'Descendants of William Shankland', Oscar had 1 child with Anna, Ella D.; and 6 children with Mary Catherine: Jessie May, Karl Marion 1876-1950, Earl Elmo, 1880-1965; Edna Pearl; Roy Clyde; and Lulu Myrtle.
 In the 1870 census for Lebanon, Center township, Boone Co., Indiana, 'K. M. Shanklin' is 64, a farmer from Delaware with $1800 in real estate and $1200 personal.  Wife Sarah K. is 53 from Kentucky and their children are O. D. 28, farm laborer; Martha 22; Erastus 21; and Ellen H. 2 [grandchild by Oscar]. {p. 44, dwelling 676, family 690}
In the "Combination Atlas Map of Boone County, Indiana, compiled, drawn and published from personal examinations and surveys by 1878, there is a listing for "Shankland, O.D. Section 29 1849 Indiana Lebanon, Farmer and Stock-Raiser".

 In the 1880 census for District 98, Aurora, Hamilton Co., Nebraska, 'A. D.' Shankland is a farmer, age 39, born Indiana (father Delaware, mother Kentucky).  His wife Kate is 24, born New York (parents Germany).  Their children are Jessie M., daughter, 5, born Indiana; and Carl, 4, born Indiana.  Also in the household is Wm. Nease, farmer, born Indiana, age 18. {p.330c, NARA T9-0750} His brother Erastus is on the same page.
 In the 1893 Roster of Nebraska Veterans, Indiana Enlistees, 'O. D. Shankland' of Aurora, is listed as corporal in company F, 135th Indiana infantry and company I, 10th Indiana Infantry.
 In the 1900 census for Aurora, 3rd Ward, Hamilton Co., Nebraska, Oscar Shankland is 60, born Oct 1840 in Indiana (father Maryland, mother Kentucky), married 26 years, retired farmer; wife Mary C. is 45, b. Sept 1855 in New York (parents Germany), with (?) of 6 children living; the children are Edna P. b. Dec 1881; Roy A. b. Feb 1883; and Lula M. b. July 1884 -- all in Nebraska, father Indiana, mother New York. {ed 80, sh 17a, p. 140} His son Carl is in Grant township, age 23, born Aug 1876 in Indiana; with brother Earl 19 born June 1880 in Nebraska and sister Jessie 25 born Aug 1875 in Indiana -- all single, father Indiana, mother New York.
