According to the Shankland Family Research by Albert Shankland, Erastus married Mahala Anna Smith in 1871 and had 2 children.

 In the 'Combination Atlas Map of Boone County, Indiana 1878', there is a listing for 'Shankland, E.F. [settled] 1849 Indiana Lebanon Farmer and Stock-Raiser' in Center township.
 In the 1880 census for District 98, Aurora, Hamilton Co., Nebraska, 'E. S. Shankland' is 31, a farmer born in Indiana (father Delaware, mother Kentucky).  His wife Mahala A. is 27, born Indiana (parents Indiana) and their sons are Claude, 7, born Indiana, and Marion, 4, born Illinois. {p.330c, NARA T9-0750}  His brother Oscar is probably the 'A.D. Shankland' listed next door.

 In the 1900 census for Aurora, ward 3, Hamilton Co., Nebraska, Anna Shankland ['Skankland' in index] is 47, born Jan 1843 in Indiana (parents same), widow, with 2 of 2 children living.  Son (Ulva?) C. is 27, born Feb 1873 in Indiana (parents same), single, clothing salesman. Son in law Otis M. Newman is 24 b. (July?) 1875 in Indiana (parents same), married 0 years, dentist; with [his wife] daughter Marion 24 b. Feb 1875 in Illinois (parents Indiana), 0 of 0 children. {ed 80, sh 19a, p. 142}
 Anna is listed in 1910 in Aurora with Otis and Marion, with only 1 of her 2 children living; and in 1920 as well.

 According to 'History of Hamilton and Clay Counties', Floyd Shankland came to Hamilton Co., Nebraska in 1880.  His daughter Marian married Otis M.
