"Their home was given to become the site of the Norman Williams Public Library, on the green in Woodstock, VT, by Dr. Edward H. Williams (son). The Library was founded by him, with the aid of his brother Norman, of Chicago, who was a trustee of the Crerar Library in Chicago. The Library was built in 1884" County Clerk & Sec. of State of Vermont Colonial families of the United States of America: Volume 1 page 592 NORMAN WILLIAMS, b. 6th October, 1791; d. 12th January, 1868; was member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Valedictorian of his class, A.B., University of Vermont, 1810, and A.M., Trustee of University of Vermont, Attorney at Law, Register of Probate, 1814-1819; Auditor of Accounts against the State of Vermont, 1820-23; Secretary of State, 1823-1831, when he declined further office; Clerk of the Courts of Windsor County, 1834-1868; State Senator for several terms; commissioner to rebuild present Capitol building; one of the incorporators and a trustee of the Vermont Medical College, both town banks, the County Agricultural Society, and numerous other societies for the welfare of the town. In Congress for one term and speaker of the state House of Representatives for three years. In 1838 he moved to Woodstock, where he formed a partnership with Norman Williams that lasted until the spring of 1839, when Mr. Williams became county clerk. |
