EDWARD HIGGINSON WILLIAMS, M.D., b. 1st June, 1824; d. at Santa Barbara, California, 21st December, 1899; he fitted himself for the profession of a Civil Engineer in Woodstock and Pontiac, Mich.; an accident put a stop to this, and he graduated in 1848 at the Vermont Medical College; he had the treatment of a man who had a tamping bar blown through his head, and who recovered; in 1853, his health permitting, he began to practice Civil Engineering, and, after building a short road in Canada, was connected with the pioneer roads into the West; in 1865 he became General Superintendent of the Pennsylvania Ry., and in 1870 a member of the Baldwin Locomotive Works; in 1876 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Sweden, and was created by the King a Knight of the Order of the North Star; he was United States Commissioner to the Sydney (Australia) Exposition; he erected the Science buildings for Carleton (Minn.) College, and the University of Vermont, and has given largely to other institutions; m. 15th June, 1848, Cornelia Bailey PRATT, b. 16th January, 1827; d. in Rosemont, Pa., 16th July, 1889 Herringshaw's Encyclopedia of American Biography of the Nineteenth Century.

page 1013 WILLIAMS, EDWARD H., manufacturer, philanthropist, was born June 1, 1824, in Woodstock, Vt. He has traveled extensively for the Baldwin Locomotive works, of which he is a partner, and has introduced the Baldwin locomotives to Europe, South America, Australia and Japan. Williams Hall at Carleton college, Minnesota, was built by him and a sixteen inch telescope given to the institution in 1891. He has also presented the Norman Williams library to Woodstock, Vt., and, in memory of his wife, a building to the university of Vermont.
