Colonial families of the United States of America: Volume 1 page 591 HON. JESSE WILLIAMS, b. 14th June, 1761; d. at Woodstock, Vt., 27th January, 1842; he remained in Mansfield till the close of the Revolution; he accompanied the Mansfield Company to Boston at the Lexington Alarm, and was at the battle of Bunker Hill; he then returned to Mansfield; when he was but nineteen years of age he conveyed a large amount of merchandise from Boston to Philadelphia; it was seized at Trenton, N. J., for some technicality, and Williams rode post to Boston and back in a week with the necessary papers, and carried it to its destination; he was engaged in this business till he removed to Vermont; he was the first merchant in Woodstock, trading through Hartford, Conn.; in 1797 he was appointed, by the Governor and Council, Associate Judge of the County Court till 1803, when he was appointed Chief Judge, but declined; he was then appointed Judge of Probate, which office he held till 1815, when he declined further office; he represented the town in the Legislature for several terms; m. at Woodstock, Vt., his first cousin, Hannah PALMER, dau. of Captain Gershom, 3d, and Lucy (FIELD) PALMER, b. at Mansfield, Conn., 1st April, 1769; d. at Woodstock. Vt., 27th January, 1837. |
