lived in Mansfield, CT & Woodstock, VT Colonial families of the United States of America: Volume 1 CAPTAIN PHINEHAS WILLIAMS, b. at Watertown, Mass., 5th November, 1734; d. at Woodstock, Vt., 28th December, 1820; was Captain of the Mansfield Company, before he left Mansfield in 1774 for Woodstock, Vt.; commissioned Captain of the first company raised east of the Green Mountains, and on the muster of the regiment elected Colonel, which office he declined, when his eldest son, Oliver, was elected Colonel, and he remained Captain of his company; through the man�uvering of Ethan Allen the Vermonters were prevented from active service, but Captain Williams acted as head of the Commission that gathered and forwarded provisions for the Revolutionary forces during the war. Captain Williams was first selectman for a number of years and represented Woodstock in the Legislature; he was a Surveyor and with his son, Oliver, laid out the original warrants of Woodstock; he was a Civil Engineer, and built the Woodstock roads (which are noted for their low grades), and many of the first bridges; for the first fifty years of the life of the town (1774-1824) there were at least three of his descendants holding office yearly; m. at Mansfield, Conn., 12th January, 1754, Mary FIELD, dau. of Bennet and Elizabeth (SPOFFORD) FIELD of Mansfield (Coventry), Conn.; b. at Lebanon, Conn., 12th November, 1735; d. at Woodstock, Vt., 26th March, 1810.
