Nora Myrtle Dugger was born September 7, 1882 in Brazil, Clay County, Indiana per her tombstone and the Amos Dugger family sheet wriiten by her daughter's Leoma Trotter Smith and Ester Trotter Stinson. In 1883 Nora moved in ox-drawn wagons with her parents, brother; Owen, grandftaher; Amos and other family members to Reno County, Kansas, In the spring of 1885 the family moved to Fellsburg, Edwards County, Kansas. Nora is listed as N.M. Dugger with her parents on the 1895 Kansas Stae Agriculture Census in Franklin Twp.,Edwards Co, KS Page 7, VOL. # 183. Nora is aged 12 and born in Indiana. Nora attended District 40 Elementary School. In 1898, Nora's mother died. Nora was 16 years old at the time. She took over the household duties for her father, Jesse. Taking care of her younger sisters, cooking and cleaning. Daughter 17 F Sept. 1882 IN KY KY Nora married Elmer Trotter September 26, 1903 in Centerview, Edwards County, Kansas per the Amos Dugger family sheet. They moved to Cimmaron, Grey County, Kansas, where daughter Lavina was born in 1904. They were back in Brown, Edwards County, Kansas by 1905. Nora is listed with husband Elmer and children on the 1910 Federal Census taken May 5, 1910 in Brown Twp., Edwards County, Kansas.
I believe Luther Evans is Nora's first cousin, the son of her uncle Alex Evans. Nora's husband, Elmer died August 13, 1918 from the Chinese Flu, leaving her to raise their five daughters alone. Nora and the girls stayed on the farm. Nora was listed as Widowed on the 1920 Federal Census in North Brown, Edwards County, Kansas.
Sometime in the early 1920's Nora decided to move the family to Kinsley, closer to the school. She built a home in Kinsley, while keeeping the farm. According to daughter Edna, Nora would do laundry for others to make money along with the farm. Each of the girls had jobs they took care of in the household. Nora and Lavina did the cooking. Edna took care of the sewing. On the 1930 Federal Census Nora is Widowed and living in Kinsley, Edwards County, Kansas.
Louise is actually Marie. Where the census taker got Louise is anybody's guess. Marie was never known as Louise. Later in life Nora had Type II Diabetes. Nora died March 27, 1966 in Kinsley, Edwards County, Kansas and was buried next to her husband Elmer at Trotter Cemetery south of Lewis, Kansas. |
