Teaching Experience:

"I graduated from Kinsley High School in May 1923. Then I took a Normal Training Teacher's examination and was granted a teacher's certificate good for 2 years and renewal with 8 hours of college credit earned before the 2 years was up. I was hired to teach the upper 4 grades at Charlet, Kansas; a small railroad station on the Wichita Northwestern Railroad about 12 miles southeast of Kinsley. There were 2 old school buildings side by side in the school. I was quite excited, as, the building in which I was to teach was the old "Trotter" school that had been moved in. My father and many of my relatives had gone to school in this building in the Early days. I believe that some of my folks had been the ones to start the school, hence, the name was for them. My beginning salary was $115.oo, which was good for that time. I taught here for three years.
My fourth year began at District 40 (Fighting Forty it was known as in those days, because of the trouble in the school.) This was the school that my mother had attended when she was a gl, so again I felt priveleged to be asked to teach there. The school had been remodeled and was a "Standard School" at that time, with all modern conveniences, even a telephone. We enjoyed box suppers, Literary Societies, and many school programs. I taught here for 3 years, and the school condeclidated with Lewis one year after I left.
In the fall of 1929, I came to Kinsley Schools. I taught at the North Side School and taught all of the 4 grade and 3 A. The fall of 1930 I was transferred to the South Side, where I taught until 1940. Just after school started that fall, the Junior High was in need of another teacher and I was asked to take that position, of course I didn't want to give up my fourth grade, but I did. I taught English in Junior High for 2 years and also several high school classes. In the fall of 1942 I took the position as full-time librarian of the High School. This has been my job ever since.

I have worked under the following superintendents:

    County Mrs. Ethyl Ray Gaston
    Kinsley Mr. C.M. Rankin
                   Mr. T.V. Martin
                   Mr. W.E. Woodard
                   Mr. F.H. Dawson
The lowest salary I ever received was under the administration of Mr. Rankin, when we were all asked to take a voluntary cut in salry. Mine was $77.00 a month for the last semester. It was during the early thirties, I believe.
