"Elijah C. Byers was born in Washington County, Maryland, August 1, 1831, and is one of the five children of Samuel S. and Nancy L. (Bowers) Byers, the names of said family being Ann (deceased), Jacob, Margaret, Elijah and Ellen (deceased). The father of our subject was born in Washington County, Maryland, October, 1801; was a weaver and dyer by occupation, which he followed until he was thirty-eight years of age.
