Their son is William, 6, born Indiana.   In the 1870 census for Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana, Elijah Byers is a farmer, age 37 from Kentucky, with $3,900 real estate and $1,000 personal.  His wife Sarah A. is 36, born Indiana, and their son William is 16, born Indiana.  They also have a 'domestic servant', Mary S. 'Vankell(?)', age 19 from Ohio.   In the 1880 census for Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana, Elijah C. 'Byres' is a farmer, age 49 from Maryland (parents Maryland) and his wife Sarah A. is 46, born Indiana (father Kentucky, mother Ohio).  {p.48a, NARA T9-0320}
 "Elijah C. Byers was born in Washington County, Maryland, August 1, 1831, and is one of the five children of Samuel S. and Nancy L. (Bowers) Byers, the names of said family being - Ann (deceased), Jacob, Margaret, Elijah and Ellen (deceased). The father of our subject was born in Washington County, Maryland, October, 1801; was a weaver and dyer by occupation, which he followed until he was thirty-eight years of age. In the fall of 1838, he removed to Noble County, Indiana, thence to Fountain and Warren Counties, residing in Washington and Pike Townships; after going to Missouri, in 1868, he came to this township (Steuben), where he died in October, 1874. Elijah C. Byers came to this township in March, 1852, and since December, 1855, has lived on his farm of 275 acres (ninety-five of which are three-fourths of a mile west, with twenty of timber in Kent Township), 255 acres of which are under good cultivation, with neat frame dwelling, convenient stables and other improvements, such as orchards, general shrubbery, etc.; this land produces good corn, oats, and hay. Mr. Byers was married, November 18, 1852, to Sarah A. Shankland, by whom he has one child - William F.  Mr. Byers is a member of the Church of God.  "Mr. Elijah C. Byers, of Steuben township, died at his home Sunday evening, August 1, 1897, from typhoid fever.  Mr. Byers was born August 1st, 1831 in Washington county, Md...he was one of five children, his parents being Samuel S. and Nancy L. Bowers - Byers.  His father was a weaver and dyer which he followed until he was 38 years old. In the fall of 1838 he removed with his family to Noble county, Ind., thence to Fountain County, and finally to Warren county, residing in Washington and Pike townships. In 1868 he went to Missouri, but soon returned, and died in Steuben township in 1874. His son, Elijah C., settled in Steuben township in 1852, and in December, 1855 he moved to his farm of 275 acres in the same township, there he resided up to the date of his death.
