    MERLYN LESTER CARLSON youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl A. Carlson was born in Washington County, Kansas, July 21, 1923. He entered the service in the Army in February 1943, received his basic training at Camp Grant, Illinois. In September he entered Michigan State College, under Army Specialized Training program and later sent to the University of Missouri. He was transferred to the Infantry, April 1944. After training at Camp Robinson, Arkansas and Camp Rucker, Alabama, he was sent overseas, arriving in England about October 1st. A week later he was sent to France where he served with the Seventh Army.
    He was wounded in action November 30, 1944, passed to his eternal reward on January 28, 1945, in a hospital in France and laid to rest in the U. S. Military Cemetery in France. His age at time of his death was 21 years, 6 months and 7 days. He was a member of West Side Baptist Church, Topeka, Kansas.
    Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Master Sargeant Elvin M. and Sargeant C. Hardol, and one sister, Mrs. Alvin Lais. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. - John 15:13.
