Childhood

After Ida died in 1880, Merle and Perle were raised by their aunt Melvern Richardson, and grandparents, Nathan and Rosa Richardson. Merle was only 2 years old, and Perle only months old when their mother died. Melvern "Vern" and her parents and the two boys, Merle and Perle, all lived together on Hill Street, Cassadaga. Their surname was changed from Sheffield to Richardson by the aunt and grandparents when the boys started school.

Adulthood

Merle married the girl next door, Bessie Hill.

  4. Family Records.

    Merle died in the hospital in Dunkirk after having appendix surgery. He was confined to bed for 5-7 days, which was normal at the time, and when stood for first time a blood clot moved from his leg to his lung and killed him.
