When Ida died, she left her two little boys without a mother and a father who felt inadequate to raise them. Merle was only about 2 years old and Perle was only about 3 months old. George gave his two little boys to his mother- and father-in-law, Nathan and Rosa Richardson, to raise. George knew he had to keep working and the boys needed more time than he could give them. The boys surnames were changed from Sheffield to Richardson when they started going to school because they were living with Grandpa and Grandma Richardson.
