Facts and Events
Michael Joly was Elizabeth (Joly) Schmucker's brother and a tailor by trade like his father. We have a copy of a letter he wrote Elizabeth in 1888. He stayed in France when the family came to America and married Clemence. King Louis XVIII made some concessions to the principles of equality and liberty for the sake of a peaceful reign. Charles X became king in 1824 when Louis died. He desolved the Chamber in July, 1830 and took the right to vote away from the middle class. This provoked a new revolution. In Michael's letter he expresses strong political viewpoints that are pro-French Republic. After 3 days Paris was in the hands of the revolutionaries and Charles abdicated and fled to England. A constitutional monarchy was established with Louis Philippe the chosen king. He favored the bourgeois to win support for his throne thus creating a new "nobility". France was entering the Industrial Revolution. In 1804 the Jacquard loom was invented in France, but the working class fared badly. They had done the fighting, but now were worse off then before. Laws were passed against trade unions and wages were kept low, hours long. Strikes were suppressed and many died for their efforts. Michael participated in the war/civil revolution in France and spent 7 years in England, after which he returned to Paris. In 1848 Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was elected Prince-President. Victor Hugo (1802-85) wrote the novel Les Miserables, and was the chief writer of France until his exile for denouncing the coup d'etat of Louis Napoleon. Alexander Dumas (1803-1865) and Honore Balzac (1799-1850) also wrote during this period. Michael was deeply touched by the death of his only son, Gabriel in August of 1866. He lived the rest of his life in France. NAME: Michael Joly<@ltr./m.Joly> References
