Elizabeth Joly (Schmucker)'s brother, he was born 12 years after their parents married. He learned the tailors trade from his father, but then went off to learn to be a ship builder. He later became a soldier and died in Aix le Province 4 months after leaving home of an illness "brought on by homesickness" at the age of 21 in 1840, seven years before the family came to the U.S., Elizabeth was 14.
