In 1851 John Hirst, Mary's husband, was absent from home for the census. He was found heading a household in Meltham, working as a "fulling miller". In Meltham the other household occupants were his brother and other members of his family who were also involved in woollen manufacture. He may have been overseeing the establishment of a new mill that would eventually be run by his brother. John had returned to his family in Saddleworth by 1861.
